The working world is complex and continuously changing. Fast paced and high-pressured, it places increasingly high demands on employees throughout organisations. Consequently, managers and employees at all levels need a huge, wide-ranging set of leadership tools and techniques in order to meet professional demands.
On-site coaching is a particularly powerful tool in the modern workplace – one that has proven highly effective if applied in an appropriate way. At its best, on-site coaching can unlock hidden potentials and capabilities on the part of individuals, leading to a boost in employee engagement and a high-performing workplace.
Increasingly, companies are opting for on-site coaching targeting single departments, or face-to-face coaching sessions for their middle and top management team members.
Unfortunately the terms ‘coaching’ and ‘training’ are often used synonymously, or are confused with each other. However, they are in fact quite different. Training is deployed to build-up certain behaviours and attitudes i.e. the focus lies on acquiring an ‘ideal’ pattern of response or behaviour to correspond with certain situations. In training, the emphasis is placed on behavioural attitudes and training content. It is not particularly tailored to the recipient; a typical training example is a technical product training. In contrast, coaching does not have to follow a strict training guideline, but is individually adapted to meet the needs and wishes of the person or people being coached. It uses a tailor-made approach, which serves to develop a person’s existing skills and aptitudes.
Zulla Consulting & Partners usually applies a 5 step approach to coaching. This generally comprises:
- The Orientation Phase – Formulating an agreement
During the orientation phase, we assist the client in the decision making process, by illustrating the impact of our coaching approach on the various stakeholders. Simultaneously, we gather crucial information during this initial phase, in order to start identifying and personalising our coaching content in the most efficient way.
- Come Together Phase – Establishing the relationship
The come together phase is pivotal, since at this point the coach and coachee get to know each other and, ideally, progress to an initial trust building process. The objective is to further clarify the coaching approach and to review the coachee’s requirements. At Zulla Consulting & Partners we regard this first review as an extraordinarily valuable diagnostic process, which serves as introduction for the analysis phase.
- Analysis Phase – Moving from a problem orientation to a vision orientation
The analysis phase is the point at which we precisely specify the requirements of the coachees. Zulla Consulting & Partners follows the coachee throughout their mental journey, in order to identify all aspects of their requirements, even the most subtle ones. Thus we are able to transform what is potentially perceived as a problem in the coachee’s mind, into a tangible vision.
From this in-depth analysis, we derive a tailor-made action plan. Once the desired actions are defined, we support the coachees in finding the best means by which to successfully implement them on a day-to-day basis. This represents the beginning of the transformation phase.
- Transformation Phase – Helping to build a change scenario
In the transformation phase changes are starting to become real and visible. By applying a set of coaching techniques such as listening skills, changing perspectives, role-plays and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), we ensure that coachees are independently defining their change scenarios and setting their own goals. Zulla Consulting & Partners accompanies the coachees throughout the transformation process, encouraging them to pro-actively implement and pursue the manifested changes, helping them to accumulate and release energy to achieve the results they desire.
- Handover and Sustainability Phase – Assuring long-lasting integration
The completion of on-site coaching is a vital part of the process and is professionally managed by experienced members of Zulla Consulting & Partners’ staff. By this stage, the relationship has matured, much has been accomplished and results are tangible. A sustainability coaching session, which takes place a few months after terminating the coaching, reviews how sustainable changes have been integrated into daily routines. We can offer further support via follow-up calls and remote coaching.
